I know that many of you have concerns about deciphering notes and creating your own entries in a patient's chart, so I've prepared something that will help you take your first steps into the world of medical abbreviations and acronyms
  1. DDS: Doctor of Dental Surgery
  2. DMD: Doctor of Dental Medicine
  3. RDH: Registered Dental Hygienist
  4. DA: Dental Assistant
  5. DMFT: Decayed, Missing, Filled Teeth (a measure of dental health)
  6. BID: Twice a Day (often seen on prescription instructions)
  7. HIPAA: Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (protects patient privacy)
  8. BR: Bridge (a dental restoration)
  9. RCT: Root Canal Treatment
  10. FMX: Full Mouth X-rays (a comprehensive set of dental X-rays)
  11. CAD/CAM: Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing (used in dental restorations)
  12. ODA: Occlusal Adjustment (refers to adjusting the bite)
  13. DDS: Digital Dental Scan (used in modern dental technology)
  14. OP: Oral Prophylaxis (dental cleaning)
  15. OHI: Oral Hygiene Instruction (guidance on maintaining oral health)
  16. DO: Doctor of Osteopathic Dentistry
  17. NIDCR: National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research
  18. AAPD: American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry
  19. AGD: Academy of General Dentistry
  20. TMD: Temporomandibular Joint Disorder
  21. BRUX: Bruxism (teeth grinding)
  22. DI: Dental Implant
  23. OC: Orthodontic Correction
  24. FMR: Fixed Partial Denture (commonly known as a dental bridge)
  25. PA: Panoramic X-ray (provides a broad view of the entire mouth)
  26. ABO: American Board of Orthodontics
  27. CO: Centric Occlusion (the position of the jaw when teeth are in maximum contact)
  28. PLC: Periodontal Ligament Compression (related to orthodontic treatment)
  29. EPR: Esthetic Preprosthetic Reconstruction (enhancing appearance before adding dental prosthetics)
  30. AAP: American Academy of Periodontology
  31. PD: Pocket Depth (measured during periodontal probing)
  32. CAL: Clinical Attachment Level (measures the amount of gum tissue attachment to the tooth)
  33. SRP: Scaling and Root Planing (a deep cleaning procedure for treating gum disease)
  34. AGP: Aggressive Periodontitis
  35. CP: Chronic Periodontitis
  36. AP: Acute Periodontitis
  37. GTR: Guided Tissue Regeneration (a surgical technique to regenerate lost periodontal tissues)
  38. FGG: Free Gingival Graft (a grafting technique to increase the amount of attached gum tissue)
  39. GBR: Guided Bone Regeneration (a procedure to stimulate the growth of new bone in areas affected by periodontal disease)
  40. LAUP: Laser-Assisted Uvulopalatoplasty (a laser treatment for certain periodontal procedures)
  41. Perio Tx: Periodontal Treatment
  42. BOP: Bleeding on Probing (a sign of inflammation in the gums)
  43. CAL: Cemento-Enamel Junction to the base of the pocket (another measure of attachment loss)
  44. PDL: Periodontal Ligament (connects the tooth to the jawbone)
  45. GBT: Guided Biofilm Therapy (an approach for comprehensive dental biofilm management)
